The Lion King
One of the longest running musicals in London’s West End, The Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre has added an additional 4 months to its booking period which will take it to the 31st January 2011.
The Disney production originally opened around 10 years ago (11 in October this year) on the 19th October 1999 and tells the story of a lion cub destined to be king but faces fierce competition from another who wants the crown for himself. Mufasa is currently played by Shaun Escoffery.

Another successful 2009 for a West End Musical and Disney’s The Lion King reports 2009 as the most successful run for the now 10 year old show at the Lyceum Theatre.
The production grossed more than £32 million at the box office throughout 2009, a staggering £1.8 million more than 2008 according to the shows producer. This increase was not triggered by a change in ticket prices either as prices remained consistent with 2008.

The musical, The Lion King which has recently celebrated it’s 10th Anniversary in London is now officially the 9th longest running musical in the West End. This pushes Cameron Mackintosh’s produciton of Miss Saigon off of the same spot as it played its 4,625th performance last Friday (18th December 2009).
The Lion King is one of only five musicals in theatre history which has played for ten years or longer in both the West End and on Broadway.
