The Olivier Award Nominations Have Been Revealed

It’s the time of the year when the Laurance Olivier Awards nominations are announced, this year instead of listing them all, I’m going to take a look only at the categories which reference musical theatre.

With this in mind Spring Awakening leads the musical nominations taking six nominations, closley followed by A Little Night Music which takes five. Sister Act takes four as does Hello Dolly.

Rowan Atkinson, Sheila Hancock and Maureen Lipman are nominated for awards for performers in the new musicals categories and former Spice Girl Melanie Chrisholm is recognised as Best Actress In A Musical category for her take over in long running musical, Blood Brothers.

And let’s not forget the new Laurance Olivier Audience Award which will be chosen from a list of five long running productions. The musical productions which make up four of the five shortlisted productions are Wicked, The Phantom Of The Opera, We Will Rock You and Billy Elliot The Musical. Voting is now open so you can choose your winner.

Commenting on the award nominations, The Society Of London Theatre President, Nica Burns speaking to The Official London Theatre Guide said “In an outstanding year for drama, a whole new generation of playwrights step into the spotlight. Eight wonderful new plays – challenging, stimulating and inspiring – include two women in their twenties. Mirroring this, the voting for the best acting awards was so close that the nominations had to be increased, with some of the most exciting young acting talent around taking their place alongside some our most acclaimed screen stars. What a memorable year!”

The winners will be announced in a glamorous award ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel on 21 March 2010.

You can check out the full list of nominations on The Official London Theatre Guide website.
