Guide To Buying Theatre Tickets

Guide To Buying Theatre TicketsI was talking to @clouddancefest on Twitter the other day about theatre tickets and we were quite surprised that ticket prices ranged so much between ticket agents.

On the back of this I thought it might be helpful to describe the process I go through when I book theatre tickets.

1) Decide On A Musical To See
First I decide which musical I want to see (normally I know well in advance the next one I want to see) – if you want some help chosing a musical to see i’ve written two posts on this already – 5 Types Of Musicals and Sources Of Information.

If you’ve never booked tickets before you might be interested in my guide to theatre jargon and my Musical Theatre FAQ’s.

2) Check out various ticket agents & the box office
Then I check out a number ticket agents and see how much they are charging for tickets.  In no particular order I check:

Whichever ticket agent you eventually decide to book through make sure that they are displaying the STAR logo and adhere to the society’s code of conduct.

In addition it might be a good idea to find out how much the Box Office are chargong for tickets – you never know they may have some deals which you are eligible for!

3) Check For Ticket Offers & Deals
Ticket Agents are always running deals on their tickets for particular shows.  The offers range from Best Available Seats for … to buy one get one free and half price tickets.  These offers could potentially save you a fourtune!

I reguarly keep Musicalverse up to date with offers from ticket agents as I find them but that doesn’t mean that we have them all (I know we don’t) so I would advise checking other theatre websites for ticket deals as well.

Good ones for ticket deals are:

4) Optional Step – Check Your Seat Opinions
Many ticket agents before asking you to confirm your order will let you know the seat row and number – if you want to make sure that the seat is in a great or acceptable position then my advice would be to check out theatremonkey.com who have seating plans for all of the West End theatre’s which grade the seats by colour code.

If you have any further advice about booking theatre tickets and pitfuls to watch out for please leave a comment.
