Avenue Q
Avenue Q at the Gielgud Theatre
Want to see muppets swear and discuss the sensitive issues in life then the comically fused Avenue Q is just the naughty musical you have been looking for.
Avenue Q tells the story of Princeton, a bright eyed college graduate who has just moved into the glorious (ahem) street known only as Avenue Q.
The musical which is now in its third year at the Gielgud Theatre follows Princeton as he attempts to find his purpose in life. All while he is struggling with a tiny bank balance and the distraction of a busty blonde. Life in Avenue Q is nothing like anything he has experienced before and making wonderful friends with the odd folk of Avenue Q sends him on a voyage of self-discovery.
The show covers a whole range of issues including being jobless, homeless and politically incorrect all wrapped up in a hilarious must see story.
The songs are highly amusing, memorable and entertaining and they include my favourites It Sucks To Be Me and If You Were Gay.

Avenue Q is the story surrounding Princeton, a recent graduate with a BA in English as he struggles to find his purpose in life. The show mixes puppets with humans with songs exploring the delicate issues in life like internet porn, racism and the perils of dating in an extremely funny way.
In this performance (22nd January 2010 at 5:30pm) Candy Ma took on the role of Christmas Eve and played the role perfectly with brilliant facial expressions. Daniel Boys as Princeton and Cassidy Janson as Kate Monster were simply brilliant to watch on stage. I especially liked the moments where Cassidy was essentially having a conversation with herself, playing both the roles of Kate Monster and Lucy The Slut in a conversation.
The set itself was clever in that one set doubled for every scene with different parts of it lighting up, opening and closing. It represented different apartments within the street, the street itself and out and about in New York.
Avenue Q is quite simply a thoroughly enjoyable night out and is a real feel good musical.
This review was based on the matinee performance on the 22nd January 2010, there are planned cast changes coming up.
